This is my first one day workshop and will be fast pass! Repeat students welcome. Come with a plan there will not be much time for making a lot of design decisions, I will email before class with more details :)
Come explore the exciting new craft of machine tufting! Melissa will be teaching the fundamentals of tufting, proper technique, sourcing supplies and finishing options. By using a tufting machine you can quickly create rugs and wall hanging. The tufting machine is like a hand held sewing machine, using pressure against the cloth you will move the machine as the needle inserts the wool yarn in and out of the cloth creating your design. Melissa will share her intuitive process of designing by working to create imagery, color patterns, and texture within the work. She welcomes students who have a specific design in mind as well as students who are starting from a blank slate!
Each student receives their own workspace with tufting machine and frame to use during the workshop.
Workshop includes time to complete tufting at the studio, backing will be completed at home with use of a glue gun or spray adhesive, also can be hung as is

All Oregon mask mandates will be followed, Melissa is fully vaccinated, (at this time no mask required but welcomed)
During the course you will have the opportunity to create a 20" x 20" loop pile rug (if there is time to make more, additional supply costs will apply)
I will teach you how to complete each step in rug making with a loop pile tufting gun. You will have your own machine and tufting set up to use during the workshop.
After the course you will have all the info you need to complete rugs on your own.
Where?
I will be hosting you at my NE Portland, OR Studio. It is a 1500sqft open room with beautiful light and high ceilings.
What is included in the course?
High quality 100% wool rug yarn in 30 colors, tufting material, glue, and everything else you need to make a rug will be supplied. When you participate in this workshop you will have your own workspace including tufting frame, tufting gun, glue gun, scissors and other tools. The class supply fee provide you with enough materials to make approx.. a ft 20" x 20" rug. Larger rugs or multiple rugs will be additional supply cost.
I will be sharing my process of choosing color and design. I do recommend you come with an idea of what you would like to make, subject matter or colors. Unless you just want to go for it, like I do. I mostly work with out a plan. Just starting with a shape and building with color and lines.
I will also have some cut pile guns available for you to try and integrate into small areas of your rug. We will mostly be using the loop pile gun, the cut pile gun is quite a bit louder, uses more yarn, dustier and in my opinion harder to use, however if this what you would like to use for your at home process you will have the knowledge you need to know to use this machine as well. I will also demo my more industrial air compressor tufting gun the ak-III.

Using a tufting gun does take some strength and you will need to stand and use some arm muscle to hold the gun up. If you have concerns if you will be able to complete a rug I'd be happy to talk to you to see if it will be possible for you.
Snacks and drinks will be provided through out the day.
There are 2 studio dogs that may be hanging with us during the workshop.

Cancellations:
If you cancel before October 1st $150 will be refunded, the deposit is $100
If you cancel after October 1st $50 supply fee will be refunded only, unless your spot is filled.
If I cancel the workshop a full refund will be given.

Class schedule
Lunch will be around 1pm each day, light snacks and drinks provided, food carts near by, fridge space available. I recommend bringing a lunch to give yourself as much time as possible to complete rug.
